ART LESSONS

CURRICULUM:

The School offers two curriculums for students interested in taking art lessons.

ART SHOWS:

Just as the Suzuki violin student looks forward to perfecting and playing his compositions by performing and playing in concerts, so the art student looks forward to producing and perfecting a number of  “masterpieces” for a community art show every few months.

METHOD:

Similar to the Suzuki method of playing the violin, each skill and technique of the art student is broken down into its smallest component parts, and practiced consistently by producing art composition after art composition until the technique is mastered.

The Suzuki student on violin finds great joy in being able to play compositions right away, continuing on to master piece after piece of the Suzuki repertoire--each piece laying the foundation for new techniques and skills.  In a similar way, the art student finds great joy in being able to produce a simple still-life right from the beginning, continuing on to master painting after painting--each painting laying the foundation for new techniques and skills in art.

Just as young children learn the violin by listening and imitating the sounds and motions that they see--in a constant effort to imitate and produce the sound of their teacher--so it is that young art students learn by observing and imitating the skills of their teacher.

Dr. Suzuki discovered that any child, regardless of aptitude, could learn to play a musical instrument.  In the same way, any child can experience the joys of becoming a young artist.

In addition to the fun of being able to produce beautiful paintings, the students enjoy learning about the lives and art of the Great Masters, and the techniques they used.

STUDENT ART:

In the beginning, tiny kids to older children experience the joy of seeing an apple come to life on the canvas, and then they continue to learn how to paint more complicated still life subjects in pastels, advancing to landscapes and portraits.  The young artists who produced the following paintings ranged from 8 to 12 years in age.

AGE OF STUDENTS:

The younger the student, the faster and more easily he will learn.  Many young children are able to begin art lessons as young as four or five years of age.  Older students who have previously studied art will be evaluated and begin at the level at which they left off.

ART TEACHER:

At the age of 6, Molly-Ann Pereira began her private art study under Mrs. Dot Horle, a well-known Philadelphia artist of the 50's and 60's.  As a small child, Molly-Ann observed and imitated the skills of her teacher who in turn had imitated and was famous for her use of the techniques of the Great Masters.  Molly-Ann studied under Mrs. Horle for some nine hours a week, producing lovely masterpieces of her own almost from the beginning.

Molly-Ann continued to study under Mrs. Horle for the next ten years continuing to advance to more difficult skills in pastels and oils later advancing to portrait art.
